Woman's jaw broken in cab stoning

taxi sign

A 25-year-old German woman had her jaw broken when a stone was thrown at a taxi in south Belfast.

It happened in Glenmachan Street at about 2300 GMT on Wednesday. The driver and two other passengers were not injured in the attack.

The stone went through the car's windscreen and hit the woman.

Police have appealed for information about three or four youths wearing hooded tops seen in the Broadway area at the time.

The chairman of Blackstaff Community Development Association, Billy Dickson, said it was an ongoing problem.

"There have been incidents in the past in that area - stone throwing incidents from Glenmachen Street round to Roden Street, so you're not going to eradicate that kind of behaviour completely," he said.

"We would like to see more police patrols in the area, but being an interface the police can't be there all the time."

South Belfast Alliance Party assembly member Anna Lo said the attack was appalling.

"These acts ruin lives and they must stop now," she said.

"Belfast has had problems in the past with people throwing bricks and stones at vehicles from overpasses, so the police should consider building fences to safeguard drivers and passengers alike."
