Blaze at tyre depot 'deliberate'

fire service

A blaze at a tyre depot in Londonderry was started deliberately, the Fire and Rescue Service has said.

The fire on the Corrody Road in Gobnascale was believed to have started at about 1930 GMT on Friday.

A fire service spokesperson said crews had to work quickly to remove gas cylinders which would have exploded if they had overheated.

The spokesperson said people who had gathered to watch a fireworks display could have been injured.

Police said the area around the scene of the blaze had been cordoned off until an examination could be carried out in daylight.
