The Roads Service has defended its response to the heavy snow which caused treacherous conditions on the Glenshane Pass on Tuesday morning.

The road was blocked for a time, and there was an accident in nearby Feeny.

Section engineer with the Roads Service, Austin Montgomery, said they "were fully prepared for bad weather".

"The weather changed rapidly from rain to sleet to snow then back to rain, and under those circumstances any salting can be diluted by rainfall."

"That allows snow to build up," he said.

BBC NI weather presenter Jackie McCann said the worst of the weather had passed.

"There are still some nasty showers around, but the worst of the wintryness should have passed for now.

"Tonight the main hazards are frost and ice."
