Arrest in newly wed hit-and-run

Garda sign

A 21-year-old man has been arrested by gardaí investigating a suspected hit-and-run incident in which a County Tyrone man was killed.

The body of Jonathan Heagney was found on the road between Carrickmacross in County Monaghan and Kingscourt, County Cavan, on Saturday.

Mr Heagney from Aughnagar, Galbally, had been at a family wedding in County Cavan.

The 26-year-old had only recently got married himself.

"They (Mr Heagney and his wife) had just moved into a new home - the world ahead of them" said parish priest Fr Gerard McAleer.

"And all the plans that young couples have and everything is just in ruins at the moment."

Gardaí believe the victim was hit by a car some time between 0200 BST and 1400 BST on Saturday. They have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

They particularly want to hear from anyone with information about a dark red or maroon coloured Audi car that may have been in the area at the time and may have been damaged.
