Governor knew of jail murder plan

LVF leader Billy Wright was shot dead in the Maze Prison in 1997

A former prison governor has told the inquiry into the murder of Billy Wright that he knew the INLA was trying to kill the LVF leader.

Duncan McLaughlin, who was governor at Maghaberry prison at the time, said he knew about the INLA's intentions eight months before his murder.

He said he was told during secret talks with INLA leaders in April 1997.

Mr McLaughlin said he had started meeting the INLA in 1993 at the request of members of the Quaker movement.

Wright was shot dead by the INLA inside the Maze prison in December 1997.
