Jobs under threat at pork company

A County Antrim pork processing firm has said it may close with the loss of about 100 jobs.

Stevenson & Co has been in business in Cullybackey for more than 150 years.

The company has blamed the rising cost of fuel and electricity, and a large rise in the price of pigs for the proposed closure of the business.

In a statement, it said its trading costs had risen by £4,500 per week in the last 12 months, but emphasised that creditors would be paid in full.

"We very much regret this decision as it affects both our pig suppliers, customers and employees who have been loyal over the years," it said.

It is understood meetings will be held with union representatives within the next week over the timetable for the closure of the business.

The firm manufactures pork products for the wholesale, retail, and catering sectors.

The company was established in Ballymoney in 1850 and moved to its current premises in 1982.
