Belfast city centre got a little red carpet glamour on Thursday night, when it hosted the European premiere of big budget movie City of Ember.

Much of the filming took place in Belfast's Titanic quarter, where the shipyard's former painthall was transformed into an underground city.

Fourteen-year-old rising star Saoirse Ronan stars in the film.

The Oscar-nominated Irish actress said she was "delighted" by the reaction of the audience.

"I'm just after going round the whole room and asking people did they like it, so they did which is brilliant.

"They said it looked, they really loved it."

In 2007 Saoirse was nominated for an Oscar, Bafta and Golden Globe for her portrayal of a young Briony Tallis, alongside Keira Knightley and James McEvoy, in Atonement.

Next year, she will star in the film adaptation of Alice Sebold's book Lovely Bones.

City of Ember stars Bill Murray and Tim Robbins, and was produced by Tom Hanks.

It tells the story of how two children go on a mission to save their city when its power supply breaks down.
