Emotional reunion for TA soldiers

Soldier

Territorial Army soldiers have had an emotional reunion with their loved ones after a six month tour in Afghanistan.

About 120 soldiers from the second battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment served alongside regular soldiers.

Lt Col Andrew Cullen said it was an "exceptional tour", where the reservists trained the Afghan army and fought insurgents.

"They got up close and personal with the Taleban - reservists who 11 months ago were brickies and teachers."

Lt Col Cullen said a planned homecoming parade "was not a political statement".

"They've made enormous sacrifices and efforts. I think that should be applauded. They should have the right to put their heads up high."

Company commander Major Mark Hudson said: "The boys are very honoured and proud to be asked to parade through the capital city but just now it is time to spend a bit of time with the family."
