Sinn Fein Councillor Charlie McHugh has died suddenly in his home in Castlederg on Friday.

The councillor had been a member of Strabane District Council since 1985. He was elected Chairperson from 2000-2001.

West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty said Mr McHugh's sudden death has left everyone numb with shock and sorrow.

"Everyone will rally around in the days ahead to try and comfort and support the family," he said.

"Charlie's exceptional qualities came to the fore in every aspect of his life", he said.

Mr Doherty pointed to his role as a family man, an elected representative and his lifelong role in the republican movement.

Councillor McHugh is survived by his wife, son and two daughters.
