Sir Hugh Orde

Sir Hugh Orde has been suggested as a possible successor to the current head of the Metropolitan Police.

An article in The Times newspaper said ministers, senior officials and police officers have secretly discussed replacing Sir Ian Blair.

It also reported Sir Ian's contract would not be renewed when it expires in two years' time.

A PSNI spokeswoman said the force would not be commenting on speculation surrounding the chief constable.

Sir Hugh, who was appointed to Northern Ireland's top policing post in May 2002, has previously served with the Met. He joined the force in 1977 and initially served in central London.
