Talks over changes to MoT rules

Vehicles are currently tested at MoT centres

The government is considering allowing private garages in Northern Ireland to carry out MoT tests, according to a motoring organisation.

Currently, all MoTs in Northern Ireland have to be done by inspectors at government test centres.

Tim Shallcross of the Institute of Advanced Motorists said talks between the Driver and Vehicle Agency and the motor industry are about to begin.

"Talks about extending the scheme are taking place this September," he said.

"There is no reason why garages can't do it, so fingers crossed, over the next couple of years we are going to see a much more convenient scheme for motorists in Northern Ireland."
