Two women have been rescued after falling into mud at the River Lagan in Belfast.

The Fire and Rescue Service said one was semi-conscious and the other was suffering from shock and exposure.

It is understood the two women, both in their 30s, slipped into the mud and a passer-by raised the alarm when he heard their cries at about 0345 BST.

Group commander Chris Kerr said specialist equipment was needed because the mud was waist-high in some places.
