Town's second fish kill in 24 hrs

Hundreds of of coarse fish and pike have been killed

There has been a second major fish kill in Portadown, County Armagh.

The Environment Agency said significant numbers of coarse fish and pike have been killed near Shillington's Bridge.

Hundreds of dead fish were discovered in Moneypenny's Lock, off the Newry Canal, on Tuesday.

Norman Henderson of the DoE said there was no evidence of pollution, and that low oxygen levels in the water may have been a factor in both incidents.

"There's a lot of vegetation at the bottom and as that dies off, it uses up a lot of oxygen and that in turn kills the fish."

Mr Henderson said a clean-up of the canal was recently put at £1m per mile of water.
