Age limit on training is lifted

The upper age limit for starting apprenticeships is to be removed

The upper age limit at which people can begin apprenticeships is to be removed from next month, the employment and learning minister has said.

At present in Northern Ireland, only people aged between 16 and 24 can begin a trade apprenticeship.

However, from September the restriction will be lifted and apprenticeships will be open to everyone over 16.

Sir Reg Empey said the scheme would enable employers to develop and enhance the skills of their workforces.

Speaking at the launch of the scheme at the NIE training centre at Nutts Corner, he said investing in employees would realise a skilled workforce that would improve productivity, raise skills standards, and improve the quality of customer service.

"Everyone reaps the benefits, employees, companies, and ultimately, the wider economy.

"I urge all employers, both large and small, to really make it their business this year to find out more about apprenticeships and how they can help their business grow, as well as raise the skills level of the Northern Ireland workforce."
