Canals 'could be top attraction'

The group claims NI's canals could become a top tourist attraction

Northern Ireland's canals could become a top tourist attraction to rival the Giant's Causeway, it has been claimed.

However, the Ulster Waterways Group has said this can only happen if the government invests more money in them.

It said that with enough work, it would be possible for boats to sail from central Belfast to Lough Erne.

But Erskine Holmes said the project would need the backing of politicians and other interested bodies.

"We need the tourist board to recognise that this needs to become one of their signature projects," he said.

"I mean how many times can you reinvent the Giant's Causeway or Titanic Quarter? This is the heritage.. this is recreational activity tourism and this is the future."
