Chaplain in prison cake drama

Gardai are investigating the incident at the jail

The chaplain of an Irish jail has been unwittingly caught up in an attempt to smuggle a mobile phone into the prison - hidden in a cake.

Gardaí in Dublin are investigating what happened at Mountjoy Jail on Monday.

They said they were satisfied that Sr Eithne was innocent and had no idea what was in the cake.

A prisoner had asked that a cake be brought into the jail. The authorities agreed to this and asked her to collect it and bring it in.

But the hidden phone was picked up by security scanners.

A Prison Service spokesman said it highlighted the rigorous security measures in place to crack down on smuggling items into the jail.
