High alert warning over oil theft

The price of oil has almost doubled in the last year.

The police have warned people across Northern Ireland to be on high alert with regards to possible oil-theft at their homes.

It comes after the price of oil has almost doubled in the last year.

A PSNI crime prevention officer said that the elderly in particular were being targeted by criminals wanting to cash in on rising prices.

"It's across the board, but I would assume that it hits the elderly much more," said Derek Ewing.

Londonderry woman Susan Charlesworth has had oil stolen twice recently.

"The price of it, I mean, it's terrible," she said.

"You're out working and you're trying to keep your home going, paying your way and then this happens. It's despicable."

Householders are advised to do what they can to make it more difficult for thieves to get into their oil tanks.
