Drink-driver weaved between lanes

Belfast Crown Court

A man caught driving while almost three times over the alcohol limit has been jailed for two years.

Brian Mongan, 35, of no fixed abode, admitted dangerous driving, drink-driving and having no car insurance.

Police spotted him weaving between lanes on the M1 near Lisburn in January, Belfast Crown Court was told.

When officers stopped him having driven the wrong way round Broadway roundabout he was "virtually unable to stand". He also received a 15-year driving ban.

The court heard Mongan has 120 previous convictions, over half of which are for motoring offences including drink-driving, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

Sentencing him, the judge said the driving was a "demonstration of the danger you are to the public".

"This was highly dangerous, putting people's lives at risk and obviously a period of custody is inevitable," he added.
