Dead fish found in polluted river

There has been another fish kill in a tributary of one of Northern Ireland's most heavily polluted rivers.

Trout, eels and sprats were found dead in the Ballymartin River near Templepatrick, County Antrim, on Wednesday.

The river runs into the Sixmilewater, which has been polluted 300 times in five years.

John Mitchell, from the Antrim and District Angling Association, said it was "devastating".

"All the young trout are lying belly-up on the river, fry are lying belly-up... it's devastating to see, we now have a river that is dead," he said.

"We had put new stocks of fish in, small fry, but it's literally wasted our time for we're only bringing them from clean water to dirty water."
