Police investigating people smuggling have charged a man with six counts of facilitating illegal immigration.

The 51-year-old was arrested in Lisburn on Thursday along with a man in his 30s - he was released while a file is sent to the public prosecution service.

The Garda's National Immigration Bureau also carried out searches in Counties Louth, Dublin, Meath and Kildare.

A 12-year-old Nigerian girl was taken into the care of social services after one of the searches.

Police said the charges do not specifically relate to the girl's discovery.

The man is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
