Man in hospital after gun attack

The man was shot just yards from his home

A 23-year-old man has been shot and wounded in County Armagh.

It happened at about 2350 BST on Monday at Mullacreevie Park, Armagh. The man was shot several times in an attack by a gang of four masked when.

He suffered gunshot wounds to the knees and upper back. He is in hospital where his condition is described as "stable".

It is understood the man is Protestant, living in an mostly nationalist estate. However, there is no suggestion at present of a sectarian motive.

A police spokesman said a motive for the attack was still unclear and appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan said: "Although few details have emerged, it goes without saying that whatever the motive for this shooting, we all must resolve to create the circumstances and society where this type of incident no longer occurs."

SDLP Councillor Mealla Bratton said people living in the area were "very distressed by the nature of the incident".

"The attack will remind the local community of the dark days of the Troubles and it is hoped that the perpetrators will be caught so that the likes of this is prevented from ever happening again."
