Victim's family tackle violence

An initiative to tackle anti-social behaviour has been launched by Security Minister Paul Goggins.

He launched the initiative along with the family of murdered greengrocer Harry Holland, who was stabbed near his home in Norfolk Drive last September.

The 65-year-old was trying to stop a gang from stealing his van at the time of the attack.

Mr Goggins said a more co-ordinated community response was needed to deal with the problem.

"The message from all parts of the community is the same - everyone wants something done to make their streets safer," he said.

"Experience tells us that the answer can not simply be imposed. It requires a practical partnership at local level. Everyone has a part to play."

Mr Holland's sister Geraldine McAteer said they hoped the move would have a positive impact.

"After the murder of Frank McGreevy, we had called for a task force which would involve all of the agencies in west Belfast, the elected representatives, community representatives and so on," she said.

"I think this is a very good start in terms of that approach."

Mr McGreevy died in hospital after being attacked outside his Ross Street flat on 15 March.

A 16-year-old girl accused of Mr Holland's murder has been released on bail.
