Anger at plans to close station

Police officers

More than 100 people have voiced their opposition to proposals for the closure of Kesh police station in Fermanagh.

Earlier this month, plans were unveiled to shut down a total of four police stations, leaving three in the county.

Others earmarked are Belleek, Belcoo and Newtownbutler. In 2005, the number of stations was cut from 13 to seven.

People at a meeting in Kesh on Monday night offered alternatives to closing the station, including downsizing or sharing with local community groups.

The PSNI district commander, Michael Skuce, said it was a matter of money. He said the budget was decreasing and difficult choices had to be made.

If the proposals are passed, it would mean stations would remain in Enniskillen, Lisnaskea and Irvinestown.

There are also proposals to relocate the station in Enniskillen, with discussions to be held about the most appropriate and effective site for it.

The Lisnaskea station could also be downsized.

The meetings will continue until Thursday this week, in each of the villages affected.
