Man dies after chemical explosion

A man has died following an explosion at a chemical plant in County Cork.

It happened at a facility owned by Corden PharmaChem in Little Island at about 0125 BST on Monday.

Fire crews and ambulances attended the scene and four men were taken to Cork University Hospital, where the man died.

Two of the others have since been discharged, while the condition of a third man has been described as "serious" by staff at the hospital.

A spokesman for Corden PharmaChem said it did not yet have specific information about the cause of the explosion or the damage caused.

Gardaí, the Republic's Health and Safety Authority and the Environmental Protection Agency are all expected to carry out investigations.
