MLA fears police station closure

William Hay fears a police station could close

A DUP assembly member has said he fears the PSNI are preparing to close a station in the north west.

The Foyle MLA William Hay said he believes an ongoing consultation suggests they are considering the move because of a lack of resources.

Mr Hay said he was worried it would have a negative effect on policing.

A spokesperson from the PSNI said it is carrying out a review of its buildings in the Foyle area, but no decisions have yet been taken.

"If this review does look towards any closure recommendations, we will consult formally with local communities about those proposals and possible alternative policing arrangements," the spokesperson said.

But Mr Hay said the uncertainty was fuelling people's fears.

"What sort of message does that send out to ordinary people who already feel they're not getting the service they deserve because of resources," he said.
