Firefighters found the woman's body in her home

A disabled woman in her 50s has died in a fire at her home in Newry.

The blaze was discovered by a careworker who was bringing the woman lunch to her home in Courtney Hill at 1230 BST.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the house and found the woman's body in the living room.

Her name has not yet been released. The police have said the fire was not suspicious, and the fire service is trying to work out how it started.

Neighbours said they were shocked and saddened at what happened, describing the victim as a quiet woman who lived alone.

A fire service statement said its thoughts were with the woman's family.

"The cause of the fire is still under investigation," the statement added.

They said there was no smoke alarm in the house.
