Maggie's taste of freedom was brief

An orangutan which escaped from its enclosure at Dublin Zoo has been recaptured.

Maggie, who has been in captivity for 24 years, went on-the-run for an hour on Wednesday.

She fled her enclosure and was spotted by a group of schoolchildren on top of the tiger compound.

Zookeepers, who believe she made her breakout to look for a mate, shot her with a tranquilliser dart gun. She is now recovering.

They believe she made a long stretch for branches on the other side of a moat surrounding her enclosure, grabbed a wall and climbed over.

The zoo has stressed that at no stage were visitors in any danger during the drama.
