Man is remanded over city murder

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man who died after being beaten to death in west Belfast.

Thomas Valliday, 20, appeared before city magistrates court charged with the killing and six other offences.

Frank McGreevy, 51, a former republican prisoner, had been on a life support machine following Saturday's attack in Ross Street. He died on Tuesday.

Mr Valliday spoke only to confirm he understood the charges. He was remanded in custody until next month.

The other offences he is charged with include assault occasioning actual bodily harm and unlawful wounding connected to alleged attacks on two other men near the scene of the murder.

He also faces three counts of criminal damage involving a car, a Land Rover and house window.

A seventh alleged offence relates to being unlawfully at large from Hydebank Wood Young Offenders Centre in south Belfast.

During the hearing on Thursday, a detective inspector claimed he could connect the defendant with the offences.

Mr McGreevy was found injured by his 15-year-old son, Francis. He also had another son, Tiernan, who is nine.
