Two brothers charged in connection with the death of a north Belfast man have been remanded in custody.

Kevin Coiley, 45, died at his home in Longlands Park, Newtownabbey after a night at a social club on Wednesday.

Ciaran Corbett, 29, of Catherine Court was charged with manslaughter, while Michael Corbett, 36, of Whitewell Court, was charged with assault.

Refusing bail, the judge told Belfast Magistrates Court "tensions will undoubtedly be very high" in the area.

Mr Coiley, who had recently got married, had been at a club at Old Church Road on the night of his death.

Police officers had to form a barrier between the two families in the public gallery, as the court heard that the brothers had gone to Antrim Road Police Station three hours after Mr Coiley was found dead.

An investigating officer said CCTV footage was available of an altercation between the deceased and Michael Corbett, adding that Ciaran Corbett had allegedly punched Mr Coiley once.

Opposing bail, he said there would be "potential for some kind of disorder" if the brothers were released.

Under cross-examination from the brothers' solicitor, he said they had both handed themselves in to police and that, in relation to Ciaran Corbett, it was a "single incident".

The pair were remanded in custody to appear again in court on 10 January.
