Law may bring 'car breathalysers'

Drink drivers will be targeted by the new laws

Convicted drink drivers could have breathalysers installed in their cars to prevent them starting the engine if they are over the limit.

It is one of a number of new road safety measures to be introduced by the government next year.

There will also be tougher sentences for drivers who cause road deaths.

There is to be a new offence of causing death or grievous bodily injury by careless driving - with a maximum sentence of five years.

At the moment, the maximum penalty for careless driving is a fine of £2,500.

Other measures include giving judges the power to order those convicted of drink driving offences to install a breathalyser in their car when they are allowed to drive again - the engine would not start if they were over the limit.

It will also be an offence for drivers to use devices that give advance warning of speed cameras.

The government hopes the new laws will be in place by next summer.

Eighty-six people have died on Northern Ireland's roads so far this year.
