Manuela Riedo was killed days after arriving in Galway
A 27-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 17-year-old Swiss student in Galway.

Gerald Barry, from Rosan Glas, Rahoon, Galway, was remanded in custody.

Manuela Riedo's body was found on waste ground close to the railway line at Lough Atalia on Tuesday of last week. She had been strangled.

Two other men and a woman arrested over the murder were released without charge while a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Manuela was in Galway for an intensive two-week English course at one of its language schools.

She had arrived in Ireland only three days before she was killed.

Her funeral was taking place in Switzerland on Friday.
