Justice powers could be transferred to Northern Ireland politicians by May 2008, the secretary of state has said.

Shaun Woodward made the comment to a Stormont committee and claimed that 85% of people supported the move.

However, he acknowledged that the devolution of justice could be delayed if that was agreed between the parties.

Mr Woodward said that he had no power to impose a devolved justice minister in the absence of an agreement on the issue.

"There is a timetable within the agreement (St Andrew's) - I can see no reason why we shouldn't be able to work to that timetable," he said.

"Equally, it stands therefore that if there are reasons why that timetable needs to be changed and can be agreed between the parties in a different version that seems to me to be entirely acceptable."

He admitted the legislation allowed him to impose a departmental structure, but said it was "unimaginable" he would use this power.

He declined to comment on remarks from Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde that the transfer of justice powers might take place in autumn next year.

DUP assembly member Jeffrey Donaldson said other important issues must be addressed before the powers are transferred.

"There are other aspects of our work that are priorities too like education, like health, the budget, getting it right on rates and water charges.

"I think we need to sort those issues out before we start taking on some bigger issues," Mr Donaldson said.
