Three families had to be evacuated from their homes and a community centre was destroyed after a suspected arson attack in Londonderry.

The Galliagh Community Development Office at Fergleen Park, Galliagh, was completely gutted during the overnight blaze.

Two homes adjoining were also badly damaged and a third was smoke-damaged.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested and is helping police in the city with their inquiries.

Galliagh community worker Oliver Green said a family living next to the office narrowly escaped tragedy.

"A young family next door had a very narrow escape," he said.

"They managed to get out in time with the help of other neighbours. Their home has been completely gutted."
