One of Northern Ireland's best known singing tutors has been given a 12 month suspended sentence for accessing indecent images of children.

Aubrey William McClintock, 49, of Greenfield Park, Armagh, admitted 16 charges after US law enforcement agencies contacted the PSNI.

They discovered McClintock had used his credit card to access websites which had pornographic images of children.

McClintock will now be placed on the sex offenders register.

In addition he will not be allowed to have access to the internet in his home and he will have to inform the parents of potential pupils of his conviction.

Armagh council said it suspended Aubrey McClintock as soon as it became aware of the police investigation into his conduct.

"Neither Mr McClintock, nor any of the relevant statutory agencies, made us aware of the case pending against him," said a spokesman.

"We were informed of the charges against Mr McClintock through informal channels and after confirming the charges, we suspended him within 24 hours.

"The council progressed this case in accordance with all our procedures and Mr McClintock was dismissed from the council in June 2007 following an internal investigation."
