Man dies after two-car collision

Police have appealed for witnesses

A man has been killed in a two-car collision near Portrush on the north coast of County Antrim.

The victim died in hospital and three other people, including a nine-year-old child, were injured in the crash on the Ballybogey Road.

The accident happened close to the Priestland Road junction at about 2030 BST on Tuesday.

Police, who appealed for witnesses, have not released the man's name, but it is understood he was from Coleraine.

Five people were killed on the Ballybogey Road last year and two this year.

Police Inspector Stephen McCauley said safety conditions on the road were continually under review.

"Along with our colleagues in the DoE, the police are always looking for ways to improve and make roads safer," he said.

"I know this particular stretch, which I must stress is more than 11 miles long in the Ballybogey Road, is constantly being looked at with a view to improvement."

A total of 71 people have been killed on Northern Ireland's roads so far this year.
