A man is being treated in hospital for bullet wounds to both legs following a shooting incident in Belfast.

The 30-year-old was attacked in the car park of a bar at Jamaica Road in the Ardoyne area of north Belfast at about 0100 GMT on Thursday.

He is recovering in the city's Royal Victoria Hospital after surgery.

His condition has been described as stable.

Republican beating

The attack has been blamed on the IRA.

Police statistics have shown it was the first republican paramilitary-style shooting in Northern Ireland since October last year.

The same figures showed that in the loyalist community there have been 17 attacks since then.

In a statement in November, before the formation of the power-sharing Northern Ireland assembly and executive, Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said the party was "totally opposed to punishment attacks".

The party said such incidents were not the way to sort out problems in the community.

Sinn Fein councillor Mick Conlon described the attack as "unfortunate".

Fr Paddy McCafferty
Fr Paddy McCafferty condemned the attack
Father Paddy McCafferty from north Belfast said such attacks were unnecessary.

"I hope they will end immediately because they serve no purpose whatsoever.

"They further alienate the people they're trying in some way to apprehend.

"It's just a totally fruitless activity and utterly savage. It's a vicious circle of savagery and barbarism."
