Kidnapping accused refused bail
scales
A brother-in-law of Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has been refused bail in the High Court.

Marvin Canning faces charges including the kidnapping of a couple in Mullingar in the Irish Republic last month.

Mr Canning, 45, from Londonderry, is accused of causing grievous bodily harm, false imprisonment and possessing a gun with intent.

A previous hearing heard the couple were abducted and driven to Derry where the man was shot in both ankles.

The judge had adjourned the hearing until Thursday to enable copies of police statements to be made available to the court in order to deal with the Crown's objections to bail because of a risk of interference with witnesses.

Mr Justice Treacy said the allegation was that Canning went to Mullingar and then brought the two people all the way to Derry for what amounted to a punishment shooting "which resulted in horrific injuries".

"I am refusing bail because I am satisfied there are substantial grounds for believing there is a risk of interference with witnesses," he said.
