A student from Northern Ireland has died in an accident in Russia.

Matthew Howell, 22, from Coleraine, died after falling down a 40-foot stairwell in St Petersburg.

The Russian and international relations student at St Andrews University, Scotland, was studying abroad when the accident occurred on Monday.

His father is travelling to Russia to bring his body home. Vice-chancellor of the university Dr Brian Lang extended his sympathy to Mr Howell's family.

"We understand that the Russian authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident and that an inquiry will be held, formal procedure in such circumstances," he said.

In a statement Matthew's parents said their eldest son, a third year honours student, had "lived a full life and influenced many in his 22 years".

"He was the oldest brother of 10 children and a son who honoured his parents and brought us great pride," it said.

"His home church, the Barn Fellowship in Ballymoney, will miss his energy and loving smile, as well as his frequent reports of his international travels."

Dr Lang has sent a small team of staff from St Andrews to fly to St Petersburg to give assistance to Matthew's family and his fellow students.
