280 jobs to go at skincare plant

The plant makes cosmetics and skincare products

About 280 jobs are to be cut by cosmetics manufacturer Procter & Gamble in Ireland, the company has confirmed.

Management has told the 500-strong workforce at its Nenagh, County Tipperary, plant that it is shifting production of skincare goods to Poland.

The Nenagh plant was opened in 1985 and is the biggest employer in the town.

It makes products for the Max Factor and Cover Girl makeup ranges, Oil of Olay skin products, and shower gel for Hugo Boss and Laura Biagiotti.

On Tuesday, the 600 workers at the plant were told not to go to work ahead of Wednesday's announcement.

Speaking ahead of the company's announcement, Irish Employment Minister Micheal Martin pledged to help those workers' affected.

"We will do everything we possibly can to support and be of assistance to the employees, regardless of whatever announcement takes place," he said.

Procter & Gamble's said its decision came after a year-long reveiw.
