Homebase closure threatens jobs

Homebase said it would continue its search in the Lisburn area

Almost 40 jobs are under threat with the closure of the Homebase DIY store at Sprucefield near Lisburn.

The company has confirmed the store will cease to trade on 21 April.

Marks and Spencer, which adjoins Homebase at Sprucefield, is set to expand its store when it takes over the lease from the DIY firm.

A Homebase spokesman said: "All 39 full and part-time employees were made aware of the situation yesterday and have entered into a period of consultation."

He added: "All employees affected by the closure will be supported by Homebase to try and identify alternative employment, either within Homebase, its sister company Argos or with other local retailers as appropriate."

The spokesman said Homebase was opening a new store in Cookstown and anticipating the reopening of its Belfast Boucher Road store in the summer and these developments would offer opportunities to Lisburn employees.

"However, in the event alternatives cannot be achieved, some staff may be at risk of redundancy," he said.

Homebase said it would be "continuing its search in the Lisburn area for a replacement store".

Marks and Spencer said it had exchanged contracts with Homebase for tenancy of the building at Sprucefield and would soon outline its plans.
