Police are investigating a serious sexual assault on a woman in north Belfast.

It is believed the victim was attacked by two men in the Woodvale Park area of the city. The incident was reported to police at about 1800 GMT on Monday.

The woman, who is in her late teens, suffered cuts and bruising to her body.

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the Woodvale Park or Ballygomartin Road area at the time of the attack to contact them.

Chief Inspector Andrea McMullan said the girl had been walking home on Monday when she was set upon.

Chief Inspector McMullan added: "She was attacked by two males and viciously raped. She has bruising and cuts to near enough every part of her body.

"She has been kicked to the face and is very, very shaken up by this unprovoked attack. This was a brutal, horrendous and vicious attack."

DUP West Belfast assembly member Diane Dodds urged anyone with any information about the incident to contact police.

"Clearly the perpetrators of this crime are dangerous and need to be caught and put behind bars immediately," she said.

"The community in the Woodvale are shocked that this has taken place in their midst."
