Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams has called for an investigation after a newspaper report linked an RUC Special Branch agent to a gun attack on him in 1984.
The Andersonstown News reported that a retired RUC detective had confirmed a UDA informant and double agent told his handlers of the plan a week before.
Mr Adams said he had instructed his solicitor to write to the Police Ombudsman to request an investigation.
Mr Adams was hit five times while three other people with him were also shot.
