An ex-soldier being questioned in England over the 1966 death of a nine-month-old baby in County Down has been released, the police have said.

A police spokesperson said the 60-year-old had been released pending a report being sent to the Public Prosecution Service.

The baby, Linda Cochrane, was killed at Ballykinlar Army Camp.

The man was arrested in Staffordshire by PSNI officers, assisted by the local constabulary on Wednesday.

At that time police said the inquiry was not being carried out by the Historical Enquiries Team but was a "proactive investigation carried out by crime operations".
