Two men have been remanded in custody over the murder of a Scottish man in County Londonderry.

Ronald Mackie, 36, was attacked by a gang outside a football club before being pushed onto the road, where he was then struck by a car on Saturday.

John Richard Stewart, 41, and Thomas Rodney Colgan, 29, both of King William III Crescent in Maghera, denied the charge at Limavady Magistrates Court.

A detective said both voluntarily went to police to explain their movements.

He said that when charged, Mr Stewart replied "not guilty", while Mr Colgan said "definitely not guilty".

The pair were remanded in custody until 22 August.

Another man is still being questioned by police in connection with Mr Mackie's death, while two were released without charge and a sixth on police bail.

The victim, from near Stirling in Scotland, was watching a band parade on Friday night before going to the club.

On Monday, police said there had been a row in Tobermore Football Club before Mr Mackie was assaulted on Maghera Road, about half a mile from the Glenshane Pass between 0145 and 0215 BST.

  • Meanwhile, a man questioned in relation to causing death by dangerous driving has been released on police bail, pending further inquiries.
