An 18-year-old woman remains critically ill in hospital after being struck by a fire engine on the outskirts of Belfast.

The vehicle was on its way to attend an incident on the Stewartstown Road when the accident happened at Upper Dunmurry Lane at about 2000 BST on Tuesday.

The woman, from the Poleglass area, is receiving treatment for head injuries.

A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service said their thoughts were with the woman and her family.

The vehicle's siren and emergency lights were on at the time.

PSNI Inspector Stephen Graham said the road was busy and has appealed for witnesses.

"The young girl was walking on a footpath in the opposite direction to the Fire Service tender," he said.

"Immediately after the accident, the ambulance arrived and took her to the Royal Victoria Hospital."

The police are carrying out an investigation and the Fire and Rescue Service is conducting a separate one.

The Fire Service said the two fire officers who were in the front of the vehicle were deeply shocked.
