Hundreds rally over city attack

The man and his son were attacked in Londonderry
Hundreds of people have attended a rally in the Shantallow area of Londonderry in support of community worker, Seamus Brown.

Mr Brown and his son, also called Seamus, were beaten up in the city on Saturday night.

Speaking at the event on Monday night, Sinn Fein councillor Alisha McLoughlin called on statutory agencies to deal with anti-social behaviour.

"We as a party will be lobbying them and indeed have been doing so."

"We have to look at the Housing Executive and social services to see what they can do to help eliminate this problem," she said.

However, SDLP councillor Colum Eastwood said there had to be a policing response to the problem.

"People don't feel that the police are reacting quickly enough or strongly enough, but it is something that the police have to deal with," he said.

"It is something that will only be dealt with by local people becoming involved and holding the police to account."

Mr Brown, a republican, has been involved in community work in the Shantallow area for a number of years.
