Knife offenders could face tougher sentences

Sex offenders and those responsible for knife crimes in NI could face tougher prison sentences under government plans to review sentencing policies.

Criminal Justice Minister David Hanson is expected to make an announcement during Criminal Justice Week.

Mr Hanson met representatives from a number of organisations on Monday to listen to their views on the criminal justice system.

They included Barnardos, NSPCC, Rape Crisis Centre and Victim Support.

Mr Hanson said the meetings had been very productive.

"I said that I wanted to spend this week listening to people's concerns about crime and to hear some proposals on how to make things better," he said.

"I am particularly conscious of the public concern there is around the whole area of violent and sexual crimes. Today I heard what the issues are from those who are out on the ground working with victims.

"I recognise that government must build upon the good work being done in the criminal justice system.

"It is by having this type of dialogue and by listening to the concerns people have that we will move our justice system forward."
