The annual boat race between Queen's University and Trinity College Dublin has taken place on Belfast's River Lagan.

Queen's University won the ladies and mens reserve sections.

Queen's also won the senior ladies competition, but Trinity's senior men's team beat the reigning champions by one-and-three-quarter lengths.

Queen's vice-chancellor Professor Peter Gregson said the racing was a popular event in the university calendar.

"The camaraderie and competitiveness between Queen's and Trinity is incredible," he said.

"I would like to pass on my congratulations to all the teams that participated - they've shown enormous commitment .

"It is great to welcome our friends from Trinity here in Belfast on this great sporting occasion."

It was a nailbiting time for the Trinity's senior men's team.

Two of their teammates arrived just in time from Dublin for the race, having sat the last of their end of term exams on Saturday morning.

Trinity captain Edward Roffe-Silvester said that it had been a "very tough race".

"All credit to Queen's, they gave us a very close one," he said.

"We have met Queen's many times this season and they've beaten us a couple of times, we've beaten them a couple of times so it's brilliant to beat them here when it matters so much - we are all absolutely delighted."

Julie Lynch, captain of the victorious Queen's senior ladies team said they had all pulled together.

"Each of us individually are very strong, very fit," she said.

"We had faith in each other.

"Whenever you have that as a team and a crew and it all sticks together, you more or less get it."
