Inquest told of lack of training
Michael McCallum
Miki McCallum died after surgery to remove his appendix
An inquest into a schoolboy's death has been told two trainee threatre doctors received no formal training on the use of operating tables at Antrim hospital.

Miki McCallum from Portstewart, died at the hospital in January 2005 after an operation to remove his appendix.

A breathing tube had become caught between the top of the operating table and a transfer trolley starving the 13-year-old's brain of oxygen.

The trainees said they learned day to day working with different consultants.

Dr Mark Dougherty was the anaesthetist on duty in the operating theatre at the time.

Dr Emma Lappin was called there urgently when Miki's oxygen level dropped.

Both told Miki's inquest that they had received no formal training on how to use the theatre transfer system.

The inquest continues.
