Electronics firm bounces back

Orders from the Far East help save the day

US-owned electronics company AVX is taking on an extra 50 workers at Coleraine in Northern Ireland after winning major orders from the Far East.

The County Londonderry factory, which makes the ceramic capacitors used in electronic circuit boards, had previously been reducing staff because of a downturn in the international market.

This led to concern in the Coleraine area about the long-term future of the plant.

The new jobs, for engineers, technicians and production line staff, will bring the total AVX workforce at Coleraine to over 1000.

Now the Coleraine factory has also said it is in line for a £7m investment by its US parent company.

The firm says this will allow it to introduce new production technology.
